2019 Pinot Noir
ORIGIN OF VARIETAL
This Willowlake Pinot Noir starts with fresh, pretty, fruit aromas of cherry and raspberry, then opens up with some subtle spice and herbal notes thanks to barrel and whole-bunch influence. There is ample tannin but it sits beautifully in the roundness and generosity of the palate.
The grapes were sourced from the Willowlake vineyard in Gladysdale. The site is exceptional and produces elegant Pinot Noir with discernible, unique qualities. There was a conscious decision to allow the grapes to ripen into a second fruit spectrum which also allowed the power of the vineyard site to shine.
Once the grapes arrived at the winery, the grapes were split across multiple ferments to encourage multiple winemaking techniques such as whole bunch fermentation, extended maturation, and extra-long cold soaking.
After pressing, each component was individually run to barrel (15% new) for maturation and malolactic fermentation. After 6 months in oak, the components were carefully selected to make the best wine possible. The wine was assembled and bottled without filtration or fining in October/November 2019.
95 Points Halliday Wine Companion
A light hue belies the depth of flavour within. Sweetly fruited, with cherries splashed with chinotto, rhubarb compote and a whole bunch of tangy/tart flavours. While it has plush tannins and a wave of texture, it's by no means a big wine. Intriguing. Delicious. Jane Faulkner
