Sutherland Estate is a boutique, family-owned winery in the Yarra Valley and is blessed with one of the most spectacular vineyard sites in Australia. Purchased in 2000 by Angus Ridley and Cathy Phelan, the Dixons Creek vineyard sits at 200 metres above sea level, with a southerly aspect, placing it climatically between the warmer valley floor and the coolest reaches of the Upper Yarra.
The hill on the Northern end of the property, upon which the cellar door is built, is known as Daniel’s Hill. Designed and built by Cathy's father Ron Phelan, the cellar door is an elegant, spacious and light filled room bounded by enormous floor to ceiling windows to the North and South. It commands breathtaking views of the vineyard, Yarra Valley, Dandenong and Warburton ranges. The cellar door is open for wine tastings and sales, as well as hosting events and weddings. The cellar door is also framed by two towers which are available to book for a romantic getaway.
Tastings are available at the bar, or perch yourself at a barrel and enjoy a glass of wine with one of Cathy's famous cheese boards. Sit outside on the multi-level deck, or inside by the cosy open fire.
Angus Ridley and Cathy Phelan
The Sutherland Estate wines are made by Angus Ridley and Cathy Phelan. Angus and Cathy met in 2000 whilst both were studying Wine Science at Charles Sturt University.
Cathy worked vintage at Yarra Ridge in 2003, as Sutherland Estate was being established.
Angus also worked vintage at Yarra Ridge, before working full-time at Coldstream Hills from 2004 until 2017.
He was in charge of the Tollana Mornington Pinot, as well as other premium wines. In between times, Angus did vintages in Burgundy and California and, in what should have been his spare time, worked part-time at Sutherland Estate. He has been full time since 2018. Angus and Cathy have been making the wines together since 2006.
